Most visitors see Kintamani in the dark and leave by nine in the morning. That is a shame, because the highland is at its best in the two hours after sunrise, when the cloud lifts off Lake Batur and the crowds have already driven back to Ubud.
Watch the sunrise, then stay
Whether you climbed or drove up, resist the urge to head straight back. The light between 07:00 and 09:00 is softer and the caldera rim empties out fast.
Soak at the Batur hot spring
Volcanic water at around 38 °C, terraced pools facing the lake. Go early and you will have a pool to yourself.
Which pool to pick
The upper terraces are hotter and quieter. The lower pool is closer to the restaurant and fills up first.
Coffee on the caldera rim
The rim road is lined with plantations serving arabica grown on the slope below. Ask for a tasting flight rather than the tourist set.
Trunyan and the lake villages
A boat crosses to villages reachable only by water. Go with a guide who can explain what you are looking at, and be respectful — people live there.
Getting there
Boats leave from Kedisan harbour. Agree the price before you board.
How to fit it into one day
Sunrise, hot spring, coffee, then down to Ubud for lunch works comfortably. Adding Trunyan makes it a full day — plan for a 15:00 return rather than midday.
